Open a Pages file on Windows
Updated 18 June 2026
Apple Pages (.pages) is the word-processor format from Apple’s iWork suite, and on Windows it has no native support — double-clicking a .pages file typically does nothing useful, or shows a folder of XML. A few approaches work. The author can export to Word or PDF from Pages’ File menu before sending. On your own, you can upload the file to iCloud.com with any Apple ID and open it in Pages for the web, change the extension to .zip and dig out a low-resolution preview, or use an online converter. The cleanest option when you need to actually read or share the document is to host it at a link: drop the .pages file onto Nippy and it opens directly in any browser on Windows, a phone or a Chromebook, laid out as written, with the original a click away to download. The link is permanent and never expires, so the same address works for everyone you send it to, and replacing the file later keeps the link unchanged. The free plan covers a document inside 25 MB, which is ample.
Step by step
- 1
Find the .pages file
Save the Pages document somewhere handy. You do not need a Mac, Apple Pages, or to rename anything for the steps below.
- 2
Drop it on nippy.host
Drag the .pages file onto the upload area. It is rendered for the browser automatically, so there is nothing to convert by hand.
- 3
Pick an address
Choose a link like letter.nippy.site. First-time uploaders confirm an email to publish; signed-in users skip that step.
- 4
Open and share the link
The document opens in any browser, laid out as written, with the original downloadable. Share the link with anyone, on any device.
Common questions
Can I open a .pages file on Windows without converting it?
Yes. iCloud.com opens Pages files in the browser with a free Apple ID, and hosting the file at a link lets anyone read it with no Apple software at all.
Why does a .pages file look like a folder or refuse to open?
A .pages file is actually a bundle of XML and assets. Windows has no app that reads it directly, which is why opening or unzipping it shows internal files.
Can I download the original after viewing?
Yes — when the document is hosted at a link, the original .pages file is one click away to download, unless downloads are switched off for that site.
Is there a free way to do this?
Yes. Viewing on iCloud is free with an Apple ID, and hosting a document to share is free for a file up to 25 MB, on a *.nippy.site link with a small banner.
